About melissa de winter

Come on a journey with me as I explore various aspects of the natural world in intricate layers of beeswax…

I draw inspiration from being emersed in nature and experimentation. Having dabbled in a variety of mediums from Oil paint, Photography, Sketching, Watercolour, Alcohol ink and various sculpting mediums I could never quite settle on one.

Becoming an Apiarist prompted an exploration of the ancient art of Encaustic painting. In using hot beeswax as a base medium, I found a way to combine structure and randomness. Now most of my work is encaustic but often incorporates various layers of sketching, painting and sculpting into one piece.

I am passionate about treading lightly and much of my work makes use of reused and recycled materials.

Being close to nature it is impossible not to see the impact and changes our natural world is experiencing. I use my art to gently convey messages of social commentary and environmental concern.

My Studio in the Perth Hills provides me with endless subjects and inspiration, I find Native flora in particular fascinating, ugly and gnarly on the surface at times with such delicate beauty and robust determination to survive, somewhat reflecting us humans.
